But I have to say, although my memory of very early in elementary school may be a bit foggy at this point, I don’t remember ever going to a real school dance when I was in second grade, let alone kindergarten. But I guess that just makes me an old curmudgeon. 😳 Ah, well: I feel meshed with my karma – while everyone else spent the ’80s and ’90s trying to get in touch with their “inner child,” I alternated between trying to get in touch with my inner W.C. Fields and my inner H.L. Mencken. So I’m pretty comfortable with fogydom. Heh.
Anyhoo, Jack and Meredith’s school held their annual school dance last Friday, just after Meredith’s TAG presentation. It was (as you can see) a costume dance, the instructions for which were “50s, 60s or 70s.” I guess you can see which way the Olssons went. Beth deserves most of the credit – OK, all of it – for Meredith’s outfit. I wouldn’t have known what to try to pull together, but Beth managed it without looking deliberately, er, provocative, like I remember the outfits from Grease as being. Jack’s was much easier: rolled up jeans and a white T-Shirt. I feel like even I could have handled that one. 😉 But all in all, I thought they looked pretty darn good, considering.
The teachers and principal – Mr. Huff – got dressed up and even did a performance number (dance only, though Mr. Huff actually has a surprisingly good singing voice for an elementary school principal). He’s got the “early Earth Wind & Fire” look down pat – or maybe it’s “Superfly.” Not sure. One of the teachers had a sort of silver lamé thing going on, with a long black wig. Think it was supposed to be a Cher reference, but wasn’t sure. Anyway, the kids had fun…and even mom and dad did, too.
