Giant Squid Terrorize San Diego

Holy Squid, Batman!
Holy Squid, Batman!

And no, thankyouverymuch, I am not hallucinating. Nor is this from The Onion, nor have I been watching too many late-night monster movies. Apparently, it’s real – at least according to the Guardian of London:

Jumbo flying squid have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, California, spooking scuba divers and beachgoers after washing up dead on the beaches.

The carnivorous cephalopods, which weigh up to 45kg (100lb), came up from the depths last week, with swarms of them roughing up unsuspecting divers. Some reported tentacles enveloping their masks andΒ yanking at their cameras and gear.

Stories of close encounters with the squid have chased many divers out of the water and created a whirlwind of excitement among those torn between their personal safety and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim with the deep-sea giants.

Are they nuts? Dude, seriously. I’d go with “personal safety.” After all, what could you possibly GET out of swimming with the squid? These ain’t exactly dolphins, if you know what I mean… πŸ˜‰

  1. Yes, there is always a little excitement here in SD. But the fact that we made the “Guardian” is amazing. Dave’s comment is that the squid aren’t THAT big, and aren’t particularly aggressive. To which I said “Yet!”

    • Heh.

I dunno, but the Guardian story I linked to said up to 100 lbs, and that they’ve got “an aggressive streak.” I dunno…”died in a shark attack” has a sort of panache, as sea-faring deaths go. Admittedly, not as much as “keelhauled by pirates,” but still. They’re both leagues better than “eaten by giant squid.” That just makes ya sound like a weenie. πŸ˜‰

      • I didn’t wake up, but the paper said there was a 4.0 earthquake off La Jolla earler that morning. Maybe it just discombobulated the squid.

  2. I don’t know…I kind of agree with Mom! I’m kind of drawn to the excitement and would probably compromise my personal safety to swim with these guys. ‘Course, since I’m nowhere NEAR S.D., it’s easier said than done.

Don’t you just want to pet one of them?!?!

    • Are you out of your tree?!!!??! Did you WATCH the video? Those ugly little suckers may be a lot of things, but “pettable” wasn’t on my top-ten list of descriptive adjectives that sprang to mind most quickly, LOL. πŸ˜›
